On June, 13th 2000 the association LifeTecAachen-Jülich e.V. was being established on initative of RWTH Aachen, Forschungszentrum Jülich, IHK Aachen and representatives of science and economy. Shortly after its establishment LifeTecAachen- Jülich was able to refer to a network of over 60 members from the field of science and economy as well as intermediary constitutions of the whole region.
The association evolved out of structures of "working group biotechnology", being initiated by Mrs. Katrin Feldmann M.A., manager of dept. 4.2. technologytranfer and scientific self- improvement of RWTH Aachen. The BioRegio- competition of bmbf, advertised in March 1997 provoked the establishment of the "working group biotechnology" with the awarding of BioRegio Rhineland as being one of three model regions. At that time, the Aacheners were an elemantary component of the overall plan.
According to an analysis of bmbf there is fundamental research in Germany on a highly recognized level and industrial companies enjoy a strong position on the world market. However, what became evident is that there is an obvious deficit in the field of essential SMEs (especially in comparison with structures in the USA). Considering this, the bmbf decided to advertise a competition in order to foster the "development of internationally oriented biotechnologystructures by creation of integrated regional networks", namely to mobilize the bio- and gene-technical potential within the Federal Republic of Germany through the development of so-called BioRegions.
After the BioRegio Rhineland became known as a modelregion the workinggroup biotechnology was founded. Its aim is to forster scientific discourse, cooperation between science and economy, scientific and entrepreneurial junior staff as well as cooperations between the regions Diepenbeek, Jülich, Liege, Maastricht and Aachen. As LifeTecAachen- Jülich pooled these interests in an own structure within the association, it is able to meet the constantly growing needs for structured support.
